Most of us at one time or another in our lives will use propane in and around our homes, from everything as simple as an outdoor grill to heating an entire home.
If you are unsure of what type of tank is the right one for your needs, you came to the right place. Propane tanks come in various shapes and sizes and it is easy to find one that fits your needs.
Propane tanks can be grouped into three basic groups: underground tanks, above ground tanks, and vertical tanks. Let’s take a look at all three.
Underground tanks are most commonly used to keep with the aesthetics of your home and landscaping. In other words, the tank is installed underground so that you don’t have to look at it!
Many times just a small dome is left showing and propane is environmentally safe for your soil and environment. Installing the tank underground has the bonus of keeping the tank cool during the summer months.
The biggest disadvantage is the cost involved is much higher than simply putting the tank on top of the ground.
Above Ground Tanks
Above ground tanks are usually done in areas where underground placement would be extremely difficult or impossible. Above ground tanks are of course installed much faster than a below ground one and there are no extra costs associated with it. You just put the tank where you want it and away you go.
It is fairly easy to find ways to blend the tank in with your surroundings, but some maintenance will need to be done periodically simply because it is exposed to more weather when it is above ground.
Vertical Propane Tanks
Vertical propane tanks are many times 120-gallon tanks that homeowners use for cooking or a fireplace. They are usually discreetly installed right up against your home. They should be installed a minimum of three feet from any doors or windows and at least 10 feet from any point of ignition.
These types of tanks are very easy to install, but you are limited by the sizes available. Many people will paint these vertical tanks to blend in with the color of their home, thereby making them somewhat decorative as well as useful.
